Vikes edge James Bay to earn semifinal spot

Pat Riordan will likely captain Canada this fall at the 2011 rugby World Cup in New Zealand but he’s not known as the most elegant of players.

But his long second-half run, one of two tries he scored on the day, keyed the University of Victoria Vikes to a 39-26 victory over James Bay in the B.C. Premier playoff quarter-finals Saturday at Macdonald Park.

“For Pat Riordan to go 55 metres, that’s like a workout for him,” quipped Vikes head coach Doug Tate.

It wasn’t the way the Prairie Wolf Pack wanted to end their season.

Penalties limited their efforts in the first half and forced them to play from behind facing the wind in soggy conditions in the second half in a 19-8 loss to The Rock in the Canadian Rugby Championship final on Saturday.

But head coach Mike Shelley feels strides have been made when it comes to the sport in Western Canada.

“I think we definitely put ourselves on the map,” he said, calling via cellphone from St. John’s, Newfoundland. “We have got some good players. We haven’t got an old team and we’ve got a lot of opportunities to get these same guys together to work on the same stuff in the future.

ROCK PROVE TOO MUCH FOR WOLF PACK

Rugby Canada:After 80 minutes of tough, wet weather rugby, The Rock have won the inaugural Canadian Rugby Championship’s MacTier Cup.

Hosting the championship game at Swilers Rugby Complex in St. John’s, Newfoundland, The Rock claimed a 19-8 win over the Prairie Wolf Pack on Saturday.

After a quiet first half on the scoreboard, The Rock were led by strong defence and the accurate boot of Ciaran Hearn in the second half to run away with the result.

The aches and pains last a little while longer than they used to. There’s a slight limp now and then. The knees are starting to creak a bit.

Getting out of bed Sunday mornings takes a bit longer, even when there’s three boys — ages three to six — rarin’ to go.

Seven Castaway-Wanderers to play national rugby final on CBC

Rugby isn’t Canada’s game but it definitely calls Victoria home. When CBC Sports airs the Canadian Rugby Championship final across the country Saturday one has to wonder if Victoria’s prominence as the home to the national team and arguably the top elite rugby in Canada will come up in the play-by-play and colour commentary provided.

Coverage of the CRC final begins at 11 a.m. as part of CBC Sports Day in Canada. Though the incumbent CRC champion B.C. Bears provincial side is not in the final, a cast of locals who transplanted here will be. Three players from Velox Rugby Club in Saanich and seven more from the Castaway-Wanderers in Oak Bay have been rostered to the Prairie Wolf Pack and The Rock (Atlantic).

Tom McKee leads the charge for the Prairie Wolf Pack in Canadian Rugby Championship action. The Wolf Pack was 2-0 heading into its Sept. 4 match in Newfoundland.
Wherever Tom McKee has been in the world — and the list is a lengthy one — his first order of business has always been to find a local rugby club.

So when he arrived in Winnipeg in 2008 and took up residence in St. James, it wasn’t long before McKee was a proud member of the Sturgeon Creek Rowdies.

They might have lost Round 1 against The Rock.

But the Calgary-based Prairie Wolf Pack feel like they have what it takes to win when it counts. And if Saturday’s game was any indication – a hard battled 27-23 loss at St. John’s, N.L., which signalled the end of the Canadian Rugby Championship round-robin play – it’s a goal that is completely achievable.

The two teams will duke it out again for the national championship on Sept. 18. Saturday’s result secured a home berth for The Rock.

B.C. Bears’ pre-game intelligence report on the opposition turned out to be better than their play Saturday.

Shock loss leaves team hungry for redemption

Considering head coach Mike James described his team’s opening game of the 2010 Canadian Rugby Championships as “a train wreck” it seems fitting his B.C. Bears will be attempting to get back on track today.

The Bears — the chosen name for the provincial senior men’s team — lost a shocker in their series opener Aug. 14 when they were whipped 41-6 by the Prairie Wolf Pack in Calgary. These are the same Bears who went unbeaten in the inaugural CRC tournament last season, beating the Ontario Blues in the championship game before finally losing the Americas Rugby Championship final to Argentina.
