Canada beats Tonga 12-10 in rugby sevens opener

Phil Mack and Nathan Hirayama scored tries to lead Canada past Tonga 12-10 in its opening match of the Hong Kong Sevens rugby event Friday.

Canada built a 12-5 lead on the tries from Mack and Hirayama but Tonga made it interesting late in the game on a try Atela Otaki. But the conversion was wide.

“All week we concentrated on defensive patterns and I think in the end that is what really paid off, ” said Mack, the Canadian team captain.

Argentina Jaguars claim inaugural ARC title

Argentina Jaguars were crowned the inaugural Americas Rugby Championship winners after a comfortable 35-11 defeat of British Columbia’s Bears in the final at Fletcher’s Field in Markham on Saturday.

The defeat was the Canadian provincial side’s first loss in the new Championship after they had gone through the round robin stage with three other provincial sides unbeaten and then overcome Ontario Blues in the semi finals.

This news was heralded as a potential watershed moment for the sport in Canada and around the world. For the athletes competing on Canada’s Men’s and Women’s Rugby 7’s teams, the news came as tremendous welcome surprise. For administrators with Rugby Canada, it brought an immediate and increased focus on the funding streams for these programs.

Canadian rugby players, brass and boosters figure seven is their lucky number.

“It’s massive,” Rugby Canada spokesman Doug Crosse said of yesterday’s news that took seven-a-side rugby, both male and female, one giant step closer to inclusion in the 2016 Olympics. With proper funding, preparation and the requisite amount of luck, this is a sport in which Canada might well excel. There may be gold, silver or bronze at the end of this rugby rainbow.

Rugby Canada: Doug Crosse

Playing at times spectacular rugby – it was the rough patches that ultimately undid a solid Canadian effort in the Plate final of the Churchill Cup in suburban Denver on Sunday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in front of nearly 4,000 fans.

Canada fell 44-29 to the Argentina Jaguars – finishing the tournament in fourth place – its highest finish in the seven year history of the event.

Canadian rugby coach ponders team selection for World Cup qualifier

Neil Davidson, Canadian Press: Canadian rugby coach Kieran Crowley will be watching more than the scoreboard Sunday as Canada looks to record its best ever finish at the Churchill Cup.
Crowley, whose squad challenges Argentina A for third place at the six-team tournament in Denver, is mulling over his starting 15 for the July 4 opening game of a World Cup qualifying series against the U.S.
While the former All Black has not had all his players in camp at the same time, he has had four games in four weeks to evaluate talent leading up to Sunday’s tournament finale.
