Ask Williams Lake resident Wade Cripps about his daughter Leslie and he’ll tell you he’s proud.

That’s because Leslie, 32, who grew up in Williams Lake, is captaining the fourth-seeded Canadian team at the Women’s Rugby World Cup currently being played in England.

WELLINGTON (AFP) – Rugby unions in New Zealand, Australia and South Africa have secured a 35 percent increase in broadcasting income with a five-year deal worth 437 million US dollars, officials said Thursday.

The 2011-2015 deal with Supersport in South Africa, Fox Sports in Australia and Sky Television in New Zealand replaces the current agreement worth 323 million US dollars, said SANZAR, the joint venture of the three rugby unions.

SANZAR’s head, New Zealand Rugby Union chief executive Steve Tew, said the broadcasting deal represented a major vote of confidence in southern hemisphere rugby.

BOULDER, Colo. – Rookie Rugby will far surpass its goal of getting the ball in the hands of more than 100,000 kids throughout the U.S. in 2009, thanks to the Florida Rugby Union and nearly 70 Florida middle and high schools.

The third largest school district in the state of Florida – Hillsborough County Public Schools – has announced Flag Rookie Rugby as the focus team sport in its 2009-2010 Middle School and High School Physical Education curriculum. The Rookie Rugby program will be rolled out to 54,000 middle school students and an additional 46,000 high school students in the coming school year.

Out of a field of seven traditional team sports under review for inclusion as a focus sport for 2009-2010, Flag Rookie Rugby stood out from the rest due to its low implementation cost, inclusivity for participants, the variations of the game and its high degree of cardiovascular benefit for students.

New format for Junior World Championship 2010

The International Rugby Board has announced a new format for its flagship Age Grade tournament, the IRB Junior World Championship, with the number of participating teams being reduced from 16 to 12 in 2010.

This restructure, approved by the IRB Council, means that the top 12 teams at this year’s IRB TOSHIBA Junior World Championship in Japan will automatically qualify for the 2010 tournament in Argentina, while the bottom four will participate in regional qualifying structures for the second-tier IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy 2010.
