Was the touch judges call correct? In the last few minutes of the game on Saturday Ontario chipped it toward the corner and the ball took a strange bounce into touch. Ontario thinking it went out off a Wolf Pack player took a quick lineout which resulted in a try but the TJ called it back saying the ball went out on it's own. Did anyone get a better view of this? Was there any video? It certainly would have been the game decider.

Does anyone know how a kid from BC that was on the U20 team that went to Russia and chose not to play for the Vancouver Island Crimson Tide, can end up playing for the Rock in the National Championship.

I am told he is not the only one from BC being flown out to play for the Rock.

Seems rather unfair to the local Newfoundland boys to be importing players for the National Championship

On Earth? Can we afford 2 office locations for Rugby Canada? Last year funding for National teams just went up by about the rate of inflation despite revenue going up by 20%. We need more money going into the National Teams. Save on office costs and put it towards the National Teams. Most of the coaches are in BC so why not move the Ministry of Communication out to BC as well.

So my brother once mentioned to me that on his bachelor party he would like to play a game of rugby.

Well, that party is this labour day weekend, and I have no idea what to do.

Anyone on here know a team of players who would be willing to play a game with a bunch of rag-tag guys in their late 20s?

We'll buy beer after. :)

Thinking about moving down to Hawke's Bay next year after my current work contract ends - would be a nice base for the RWC!

Anyway, looking at their union's site, I was very impressed by this coach development course they offer. (I have Aussie Level 2 quals, which was fairly intensive, but not as much work as this.)

I'm not familiar with how the new Canuck qualifications are going (still re-designing?), but having something like this would be great for our grass roots development.

Hi -

I'm looking for people to fill out a quick (5min) survey on rugby spending habits. This is for an MBA project looking into the future commercial potential of rugby. The hope is that rugby can benefit from more investment from major sports companies.

What's in it for you? Well, we've also acquired some rugby shirts and jerseys that I will be sending out to a few lucky respondents.

So I hope you'll take the time and pass it along to some rugby playing colleagues or friends. The link can be found here:

It's been a while since anyone posted on here. I'll add this bit of info for anyone interested. The Edmonton LepTigers are celebrating a combined 100 years of rugby on July 24 at their clubhouse and grounds. They have 3 games planned against the Clansmen RFC starting at noon. If you have ever played for either the Tigers or Leps or the LepTigers and can make it out your encouraged to try and fit into your original jersy and come out to watch the rugby and socialize. It should be a great day.
Cheers Shack

Hi everybody, I'm brand new to the forum so please excuse me if this topic has been covered already.

I remember reading about a young winger/fullback by the name of Jack Durling who had been playing with the Northampton Saints, if memory serves he had scored 3 tries in his first match with the club. I then recall him playing for SU Agen. I know he had played with the Canadian squad at the 2006 U-19 World Championship. Anyways, he sounded like a promising prospect for the national men's team but I can't seem to find where he's playing his rugby these days. Does anybody have any knowledge on the subject?

I've been following the story on the Rugby Canada website, and also on BC Rugby News. Interesting (and predictable) takes from both sides of the issue.

While the opportunities are interesting for our atheletes, I'd have to agree that it doesn't really serve the growth of the sport here to take away our young stars.

I've also said the same about BC, as our province harvests from the rest of the country. In that light the BC Rugby News editorial view is somewhat ironic, perhaps hypocritical...

What do we think out here? Is sending our best young players overseas to provide talent to an overseas academy a good idea? What will that do to our domestic leagues? Is this the best way to build the base for the NSMT?

DAY ONE ALLOWS FOR INFO EXCHANGE
Saturday, March 13, 2010 - Submitted by Doug Crosse in Toronto Bookmark and Share

The first day of the Rugby Canada AGM is in the books with a long day of informative presentations to delegates, ranging from meeting new sponsors, insurance executives and receiving various reports from key employees and committee members.

Watch the Rugby Canada AGM live here -- http://www.ustream.tv/channel/rugby-live1

The day started off with a presentation from Kyle Nichols of Marsh Insurance, the company that is taking over Rugby Canada's and its members, insurance policy. They explained all the value added experience and interaction they will be able to bring to key stakeholders. As a former national team player from the mid 1990's on Nichols provided some much needed perspective on the issue of rugby insurance.

The session was then followed up with an informative session with Mike Duffy and Graham Brown on Membership issues. Then Chris LeFevre offered his views and report on Keeping Canadian Rugby Competitive. He stressed that a two pronged approach was critical to keeping Canada relevant as the game progresses.

"While it is important to develop the grassroots, if you abandon the tip of the spear, I am afraid it will be too late when you try and keep pace with the modern game," offered the IRB representative.

Keith Gillam then offered up his views on Corporate Governance, following a thorough audit by a specialist on best practices within sporting organizations. Gillam was confident that Rugby Canada's governance structure is in touch with the preferred methods of building a sports organization.

The delegates were then presented with the two Board nominees, Ontario's Mike Williams and Nova Scotia's Troy Myers. Both presented well with extensive rugby backgrounds and valuable business acumen as well.

Throughout the busy day the business of rugby and all it envelopes in Canada was provided great attention, leaving one delegate to comment, "you sometimes forget that our leisurely past time still requires quite a lot of attention in order for it to exist in a modern environment."

Presentations by Matthuw Ronald Jones of the Canadian Rugby Foundation and Gerald Woodman of KooGa Canada, rounded out the day, providing a generally buoyant mood among attendees.

Day Two will deal with the votes and motions created from Day One's activities. Meetings start at 9:00AM (Time change in effect - 1 Hour forward as of 2 AM Local)

Watch the Rugby Canada AGM live here -- http://www.ustream.tv/channel/rugby-live1

[i]heraldscotland staff

19 Jan 2010

"Tributes have been paid to the “voice of rugby” Bill McLaren, who has died at the age of 86.

The legendary commentator, who retired in 2002 after almost 50 years as a broadcaster, died in hospital.

He received an OBE, CBE and MBE for services to the sport and combined his work as a broadcaster with that of a PE teacher until 1987.

There was also an internet campaign last year to give McLaren, from Hawick in the Scottish Borders, a knighthood for his work.

Scotland rugby legend Gavin Hastings, who worked alongside McLaren in the commentary box, led the tributes.

He said: “First and foremost, Bill was a very proud and passionate Scot but such was his professionalism that you would never really have known that.

“He always remained very unbiased in his commentary and I think that that was unquestionably one of his endearing qualities. He was just such a gentleman as well.”

He added: “I will always remember I had the good fortune to be alongside him in the commentary box on a number of occasions.

“One of the times that I will always remember being there, he said ‘now son if you want to speak just tug away at my coat’.

“I was keen to say something so I kept tugging away at his coat for what seemed like about five minutes before he allowed me to speak.

“It was just the sort of passion of the man that he got so much into the game and that was just the way he was. He will be sadly missed. He was a wonderful commentator and he just brought the world of rugby into so many people’s homes.”

He added: “He was a wonderful man. He was a real family man.

“He was known as the ‘voice of rugby’ and that probably will be his legacy.”

McLaren’s final commentary was the game between Wales and Scotland in 2002.

In November 2001, McLaren became the first non-international to be inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame.

He was awarded his MBE in 1992, an OBE in 1995 and a CBE in the 2003 honours list.

Hawick club secretary John Thorburn said: “We’re devastated, obviously. We’ve got a room named after him at the rugby club.

“It was very close to his heart, Hawick rugby club.

“He’s a huge loss to rugby worldwide.”

Following his retirement, McLaren would still attend Hawick matches, though ill health prevented him more recently.

“It was a big part of his life,” Thorburn added.

Born in 1923, McLaren began as a player and made the Hawick first XV prior to the Second World War.

It was through his junior reporting with the Hawick Express that he launched himself into a career of commentary, making his national debut for BBC radio in 1953, when Scotland were beaten 12-0 by Wales.

The switch to television came six years later.

Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond said: “The world of sport and broadcasting has lost a true legend with the passing of Bill McLaren.

“He thoroughly deserved the title ‘voice of rugby’ and was a fantastic ambassador for Scotland and his native Hawick right around the world. His contribution to the sport of rugby cannot be over-stated.

“His famously descriptive commentaries brought a joy and understanding of the game to rugby fans and less-knowledgeable viewers that few others have ever managed. My thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”

Scottish Labour leader Iain Gray added: “Bill McLaren was both a rugby and broadcasting icon.

“He holds a very special place in Scottish rugby and was a great ambassador for the sport.”

Two of his grandchildren are current professional rugby players: Scotland and Gloucester scrum-half Rory Lawson and Edinburgh utility back Jim Thompson.

BBC Scotland director Ken MacQuarrie said: “Bill McLaren was one of the true broadcasting greats whose voice was synonymous with rugby both here in Scotland and throughout the world.

“His knowledge and passion for the game was second to none and his commentaries helped make international rugby matches a major part of the sporting calendar every year for our audiences.

“A tremendously modest man, Bill was the ultimate professional who always went out of his way to help the many colleagues who worked alongside him over the years.

“He also worked tirelessly to support youngsters keen to learn more about the game he loved, especially in his home town.

“To those who knew him closest though, Bill was known as a wonderfully loyal friend and a devoted family man and our thoughts are with them at this time.”

Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy said McLaren would be sorely missed.

He said: “Bill McLaren’s commentary was the voice of Scottish rugby for decades and he talked us through the highs and lows of the national side over many decades, including the Grand Slam highlights of 1984 and 1990.

“Growing up in Scotland, Bill’s voice was as well known as the sport itself. He turned a generation of Scots into rugby fans.

“Fans across the world will remember his mix of passion, enthusiasm and his sheer depth of knowledge, not only of the tactics of the game but also its history. He passed his love of rugby on to everyone he met and will be sorely missed, as will his talent for the unusual but telling expression.”

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said: “Millions of rugby fans will be mourning the sad passing of Bill McLaren, who was the voice of rugby for nearly 50 years.

“His expertise, enthusiasm and passion for rugby union inspired young and old alike.

“Bill was a fixture of our national sporting life and will be missed greatly but remembered with affection.”

Annabel Goldie MSP, the Scottish Conservative leader, said: “One of my earliest memories is growing up listening to Bill McLaren’s radio commentaries.

“He became not just a legendary authority on the game, but a Scottish institution renowned for his technical knowledge, his fairness and his sense of humour.

“His death is a great loss for the world of sport and my thoughts are with his family.”

I have to say that my original interest in rugby from a non rugby town & school was through the magic of Bill Mclaren's radio broadcasts from Murrayfield between 1954 & 59 from then on faithfully on the BBC Grandstand 5 Nations coverage as it was then.

Rest in peace Bill McLaren, a personal loss to all Scottish rugby fans around this World.

It is also very close to Union Station for Go train users so no neeeding to drive if you visit the pub after. People will be mmeting before across the street at the Elephant and Castle Pub and we will also retire there after the service for refreshments.

Donations will be accepted for the Out of the Cold program that the church runs to serve local homeless people and tax reciepts are available for donatioons of $25 or more. This is a great event and all rugby peoplw are invited to attend and bring along their friends and family.

Olympic funding with no strings attached

Private sector gets in the game of giving with B2ten charity spending $3 million on medal hopefuls

(interesting on how direct donations to select athletes is an excellent way of efficiently delivering funding and getting results. Rugby to learn from this?)

Interesting quote:

"In his new book Heatstroke, a skewering of the failing summer sports bureaucracy in Canada, former Olympic rower Michael Simonson cites a statistic relayed by Dr. Ian Reade of the University of Alberta's faculty of physical education and recreation. To paraphrase: for every dollar Sport Canada delivers to its end recipient, $8 is spent administering the expenditure, to ensure that everyone's butt is covered all the way back to Ottawa."

If Ontario can do it then should be nothing to stop Rugby being a part of the Elementary School Sports programs throughout Canada.

Have been following reports from the UK that Sentanta is in serious financial trouble and could go under any day.
