Argentina Jaguars were crowned the inaugural Americas Rugby Championship winners after a comfortable 35-11 defeat of British Columbia's Bears in the final at Fletcher's Field in Markham on Saturday.

The defeat was the Canadian provincial side's first loss in the new Championship after they had gone through the round robin stage with three other provincial sides unbeaten and then overcome Ontario Blues in the semi finals.

It was suggested to have been between 650-750 but I suspect that it was closer to closing in on the 900 mark plus 10% iRB, R.C. and all the RC coaching staff and players that were VIPs for the day.

Wow, only 900 what a disappointment. I would have thought it would be close to 2000 at least if it had been held on the left coast.

Well Rusty get your left coast Agents at R.C. to put a bid in for it for next year or the one after that and just show us up.

Remember, this was the first dry run for this competition and one major oversight by iRB and subsequently R.C. is the total lack of a marketing program adequately funded to include buying TV coverage. local advertising blitz campaign in billboards, newsprint and local TV coverage.

If you have a product, take it to a test market with all it's bells & whistles and see if it works.

In fairness to R.C. there was no such financial support of this kind.

The iRB gave funding and support by pulling a national side into the competition from both the US and Argentina. The four regional / provincial sides had to work with those funds through R.C. who dangled some carrots to the organisations of the 4 teams and anything else was upto the Provinces to scrape together. The players had in most cases had to throw in vacation time or time off work to make it happen.

Wherever the final series of matches are to be played next year, it will not yield much better result of bums in seats without spending [the iRB money - it is their show piece for Americas Domestic Rugby] significant marketing and merchandising dollars to sell them, the seats and the event.

I was in Chatham and the announced attendance was 1130 and that was the paid figure. I believe that number, it was a great day weather wise and a big deal in town, well promoted by the local media. The local match organising committee led by members of the Kent Havoc Rugby Club need to be congratulated on there work. I was sitting there watching the game listening to comments around me by locals who didn't quite understand the finer points of the game but seemed to be enjoying the spectacle anyways and ther were lots of kids there, a 4:30 kick off worked well in a small town like it never would at Fletcher's. Congratulations to Chatham and I hope Rugby Canada will try this in a few other similiar sized cities around the country, take the game to non-traditional markets for A games which won't get big crowds in Toronto or Vancouver. Wales or Irleand go to the big cities but A games, or test againsts lower ranked teams like Portugal and Georgia go to smaller centres where it will be a big deal.

Harry : I like the idea of A games to be moved around the less traditional markets. Clearly in this situation Argentina A were in Toronto so it has to be somewhere they could easily travel too. So it all depends on where the A team is to begin with.

What I would be less keen to see would be chatham now becoming the de facto home base of all A team games. Additionally a process for towns / cities to bid for the privilege would make sense.

If you've been to Chatham you'd know there isn't much else do to around there.
