Centralizing is a bad thing...regardless of where it is. .Winger14
Really!!!!
Have you noticed China's rise at the Olympics, or even Australia's or how about our speed skaters in Calgary. Getting the best players playing together all the time is a good thing. And as knower said, we don't care where it's put.
The only problem with the old pride program was their name....pack of female lions.. And that they never played for anything as they weren't allowed to play for the BC title.

And have you noticed that Australia has their players spread out across their top teams, as does every other major country.
I can look at hockey here and say the same thing.
Centralizing prior to a competition I understand. Getting everyone together for training camps I understand. Permanently lowering the level of competition everywhere else is counterproductive. We will never generate a critical mass of players if we keep doing what we are doing.
Olympic sports are a different kettle of fish altogether, and in those cases it makes sense to keep the bobsled, alpine and whatever else together.

Winger, I appreciate your viewpoint of talent dilution nationally when centralized, but I also look at it from this viewpoint: Pro vs. Amateur.
Your examples of where centralization is not a factor are the "pro" sports - hockey, rugby in Aus - don't quite compare to Canadian rugby. All have the leagues/money/fans /teams are professional corporations aka businesses. Rugby in Canada currently doesn't work like this. You think Mr. Toulon Megabucks takes orders from the French Union about who plays for his club? No, he spends a shittonne of money on the players he want to bring to his club, in turn bringing more fans to the stadium.
Centralization works for "amateur" sports, like the Olympic examples you mentioned above; it "makes sense" right? The sad reality is that here in Canada, rugby currently falls heavily into this amateur category. There aren't the resources nationally to have HP centres all over the country.
It's choosing the lesser of two evils in my mind: have the best not playing together (or against each other for the most part), or have the rest not playing at a comparably high level.

Also, the sports alluded to: swimming, alpine, athletics, weightlifiting and whatever else are individual and / or against the clock sports. Not team sports. Its just not comparable.

teamaccess,
I knew the pro vs amateur angle would come up. In a professional environment you very rarely see one team dominating others with $$$ without a salary cap coming into play to force parity.
I give you the NHL as the latest example.
And even then sometime the best team statistically doesn't win. Hello Boston.
Sooooo....
Given all that, I'd rather keep players in their home provinces / regions.
I understand that we need to centralize at an NSMT / NSWT level. I'm ok with that as long as the "local" (ie Victoria) clubs aren't the sole beneficiaries of the fact that our HP centre is in Langford.
If your are carded, no club games.
Play rep ball all you want.
Play exhibition games.
Go to Wales.
Do not play for local clubs.
It's fair to all.

Wing Age Grade Championships are being played this weekend
Lets check out how the Provinces do at U18 Boys?
BC and Ont will be like NZ and AUS.
Alb and NFL will be like Can and USA.
The Rest Well, Forget about it!
The Provinces,at this level, will be using only
home grown talent and the results will give an
indication of provincial rugby development.
I wonder if Shawnigan Lake School will handing out
rugby scholarships this year?U18 Results BC 41 Que 0-BC 56 Man 0-BC 31 Alb 0
Ont 31 NFL 5-Ont 20 Sask 5-Ont 61 NB 0
When New Zealand and Australia played it was 12-7 for
the WEST. All games were shortened.Posted 9 months ago # -

Winger your Bruins analogy doesn't make sense because the best team did win. Thomas over losing Lou everytime.

Harold...Statistically over the regular season the Canucks were the top team in the league. Not Boston.
Boston was the best team in the playoffs. No question of that in my mind.
Don't reply...silently acknowledge it and walk away from the keyboard.
