Who from the forum here is going to be at brocton oval. There's a few posters here I'd like to meet face to face and say hello. I don't post all that much but I loved reading this forum when it was in its hey day.

Wish I could travel out to see the Blues beat the Bears but unfortunately there is a boat to be run in Toronto Harbour for me. Go Blues Go. Good to see John Moonlight in there.

    BC 29 ON 24

ON could have easily won this. The difference in the game was a mistake made by the ON left wing (Dan West I think) inside the ON 22. BC had put up a high ball which West tried to call a mark on. He misjudged the flight of the ball and knocked on in the air. The ball was scooped up by Ed Fairhurst, who then took the ball to the ON 5m line before getting tackled. The offload went to Brian Erichsen who had an easy wlatz over the line.

BC was ahead most of the game, but never looked comfortable until the third quarter of the game when they stretched their lead. ON clawed back and almost took the game. I'm tempted to stay stole it, but for the fact that they often outworked the home team.

BC looked porous in the 10 / 12 channel, especially in the 2nd half. Some strong running by the ON 12 Steve Shortly was impressive to say the least. Hiryama and Jenkins had trouble containing him, and in my view their defensive weakness was exposed.

There was also a lot of aimless and poor tactical kicking, and it really marred the match. Hopefully both teams will sharpen up on that.

Overall very entertaining with the home fans going away happy. Ontario will no doubt feel that they should / could have earned a better result, BC will be relieved to get the first one under the belt.

It's a shame these two teams play each other once. Hopefully this wil expand further over the years to allow for home and away fixtures.

Actually if they both win their remaining games they will play each other in the final. BC Rugby News reported 300 to 400 as attendance while Rugby Canada said about 2,000. That is a big difference, what was you estimate Winger.

There was a huge discrepancy in crowd numbers between Rugby Canada and BC Rugby News. I'd say the actual attendance was around 500-600 people. A very poor turn out due to very poor marketing. The set up of the beer garden was also poor, visibility of the game was almost impossible. Rugby Canada at it's best.

As for the game, I agree that ON could have easily won the game, especially near the end. I think BC needs to reassess some of their questionable line up selections. Sean White left the game with an injury so this will create an interesting decision for Mike James and team. Move Harry Jones or Sean Duke to full back? Jones played well at 13 and Duke was good but not NSMT calibre at 14. Duke should be moved to full back and winger Brock Nicholson should take 14 (he should have been selected over Derek Townsend - who was uninspired and slow - anyway). It will be interesting to see what happens this week in the game against the Rock. Go Bears!

As far as attendance goes, I'd agree with Rugby_Saturdays on the numbers. There is no way there were 2,000 in attendance.

More oomph could definitely have gone into the promotion of the game. You contrast the ARC marketing with the World Police and Fire Games marketing (the WPFGs were huge out here) and you understand why we don't get very far sometimes.

Just one thing on the selection side. I hope that Mike James does NOT change his squad based on the first game. They have had some inter-squad stuff, that's it.

My own take is that he'd be better off fixing the process than re-drafting players, especially after a rather extensive process.

Change individual players in the game day 22? Sure, but base that on the squad he that has chosen. They have put in the hard yards, and stuck up their hands for selection.

Winger14, I agree! In my previous post I used a poor choice of words. I did not mean to imply James should re-draft....as I understand Nicholson was on the starting squad all summer and was dropped off the dressed 22 a few days before the game. I simply meant I hope James changes up his dressed 22 to give some other guys a chance....I mean, come on, Colin McKenzie? He's a bit past his prime!

How one sided is the person writing press releases for these ARC matches? Are points scored in the first half better than the second? Seems the final scoreline is all that should be indicative of a game and thats a close result.

The reality is that the game ebbed and flowed with each side having it's moments of ascendancy, as you would expect from two evenly matched teams. At times Ontario dominated, at others BC did. Neither team dominated for 80 minutes, and frankly why would you want that. I didn't want to see a shellacking. An evenly fought contest where the result is in doubt is what this fan wants.

One mistake was the ultimate difference. I would hope that BC and Ontario play again (hopefully in BC, but we'll see what The Rock and Wolfpack have to say about that) as I think that it would be at least equally entertaining as the first fixture.

I think the ARC writer had her BC glasses on. That's fine, however then someone should write a piece that has an Ontario slant to it.

    Any takers?
