Well Canada did not get the win but a solid performance none the less.
After two games this Canadian side seems more capable than teams from the last couple of WC's.
I am very pleased with the performance so far after two games.
The Japan match is going to be tough but rest will not be an issue.
Canada should squeak out a win against the Japanese.

Tough last 5 minutes vs the French. We were very good up until then. Losing DTH did have an impact on the backline defence. We don't have the depth and are perhaps a little to over eager without the regular starters. Damian Traile should never have scored his try. Good on him, but the new boys in messed up on that one. That being said, they will have learned from that, and down the road will be better for it.
I thought Ander Monroe was excellent, Fairhurst was a cut above as well. Ryan Smith played well on attack and defence and was rewarded with a try. Paddy lead well again. The pack settled in nicely and look capable even without the starters. All around great work, and I hope the confidence comes back. We are capable of beating Japan, and with more rest days now we are in a good spot.
Good luck boys!

That was one gutsy performance. For sixty plus minutes they went toe-to-toe with the French. It's too bad the scoreboard doesn't reflect that in the end.
I hope we haven't lost DTH as I thought I caught a sight of him wincing during the handshakes post game.

Fantastic game! And agree with growapair, the score definitely doesn't reflect the game. Another way to look at it is that France couldn't do a whole lot until a couple of Canada's key players were replaced.
Also appeared to a few of us that France should have been called for a few more penalties (can you say offside? did you see that dive over the side signs?)...
All my Kiwi buddies were watching as most were pulling for Canada to best France, and all were impressed by the Canadians and understand how things really played out. Even the rugby commentators are saying the same this morning... 'course most of the attention is on the Australian loss.
Back to Napier in a few to see them take on (and crush?) the Japanese!

...and the penality kicking issue, Jeez! That could have change the running of the game, but, happy anyhow!

...yeah good show....6 points down with 15 minutes to play....the scoreline is unfortunate...all the subs at the end had an impact....really hope all the injuries are minor.
really, the best we could hope for in this tournament is a win against tonga and japan and respectable showings against france and NZ....so far we are two for two.
its been a good year for the canucks.... wins against tonga italy A, russia, and US (twice)....decent showings against saxons, france and barbarians...a win against japan will seal it.

Daughter and I go with weather as the major factor
in Pritchard having a bad day. No excuses!!
Goal kickers do win games that are close.
This one wasn't! Japan will be.
Need a Plan B if Pritch is having an off day.
AM would be my choice but when?Posted 8 months ago # -

"Also appeared to a few of us that France should have been called for a few more penalties (can you say offside? did you see that dive over the side signs?)..."
A few calls went for us too. Vincent Leclerc's "knock on" in the air probably spared us another try scored against us. We also could have ended up with a red or yellow card for two late tackles. I am not talking about the over the boards event which, as the ref quite rightly pointed out, was more dramatic looking than it really was. That's the way it goes a few calls go for you and against but I don't think that if omniscient refereeing would have worked out in somebody's favour that it would have been ours.

I guess everyone's expectations or possibly touch with reality has changed over the last 4/8 years but this game reminded me of Wales one in 2007 and France 1999(Canada down by 3 after halftime but lose 33-20). Have things really changed that much? Our skill level has grown, you'd hope, but so has the countries we play.
Still worried about the Japanese though despite a strong performances against Tonga, who dropped a lot of balls, and a France team that has multiple personalities.
"Wales defeat Canada 42-17"
Shane Williams dives over for the second of his two tries
NANTES, 9 September - Wales had to overcome some spirited Canadian opposition to post a 42-17 victory in their opening Pool B match at La Beaujoire on Sunday.Canada scored two first-half tries to take a surprise 12-9 half-time lead, and picked up where they left off after the break, with a Morgan Williams try extending their lead to 17-9.
Wales were stung into action and after their own period of extended pressure were rewarded on 52 minutes when Sonny Parker went over. Stephen Jones added the conversion to reduce the margin to a solitary point.
The Welsh then grabbed the lead, somewhat fortuitously, when Alun-Wyn Jones gathered and crossed after a series of Canadian handling and kicking errors near the goal-line.But the writing was on the wall and the gaps started to open as the Canadians visibly tired.
Shane Williams scored a brace of tries inside three minutes to ease Welsh anxieties, and when replacement Colin Charvis scored their fifth try on 68 minutes, their lead had blown out to the winning 25-point margin.
To their credit, Canada battled gamely right until the end, and might have been rewarded with a late try, but the Welsh defence stood firm.
In the first half, the more fancied Wales had the better of the early exchanges. Fly half James Hook missed his first penalty kick, hitting an upright on nine minutes, but made amends with his next three attempts to give Wales a 9-0 lead after Canada were called for infringements in the ruck. But Canada came back strongly and Jamie Cudmore reduced the margin when he crossed on 25 minutes, though James Pritchard was unable to convert.
Craig Culpan then scored a length-of-the pitch try from an interception on 36 minutes and Pritchard kicked truly this time to give the Canucks their three-point interval lead.

AM would be my choice but when?Yeah... I agree with Munro being plan B. Hearn can kick the leather off a ball but he is not all that accurate. Also, I'm not convinced we will see him in the starting line up against Japan. I thought he was a bit of a passenger. I know the ball never really got out to him but he didn't go looking either. Watch for him on the bench with Smith and Trainor at 12 and Evans at 14. I used to favor Pritchard on the wing with Evans at FB but Pritch's play at the back has been nothing short of stellar.

Hey chabaleatschildren,
Just participating in another favourite Canadian past-time: talk about the refereeing (or is it just us Montrealers?)...
I think you're absolutely right, there is always a mixture of bang-on, questionable, hey-wait-a-minute and glad-the-ref-missed-that calls. The refereeing was actually quite good; I didn't get up and offer my glasses to the ref even once during the match ;-)

I would go with Smith and DTH in the centres, and look to bring Trainor on in the 2nd half. I'd also go with Evans on the wing in place of Hearn. He didn't do enough to get himself involved during the match from what I saw.

I blame the schedule, as does: Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu.
