no funding to the mens 7's from OTP or SC, would that be such a bad thing? Players would put their energy into the 15's game where it belongs. The coach would be out of a job and go back to the old country.

Something I don't understand and I know someone in here can enlighten me.
I know (right or wrong) the carded men on the CSMT are told to head west to train at PISE and play club or go to UVic. Those that do come west and there are lots, leave their homes, family's and jobs. Do the women get ordered to Victoria also?

So the women are getting more money than the men in the carding system, and now reported they are getting 1.5 million from OTP with the men getting zero, and they don't have to leave their homes, family, jobs to train! Not bad

But does that mean that the men are really getting no funding?! Or the Rugby Canada funding continues as per status quo, but the women get an additional OTP funding in order to support 7s efforts?

The problem with removing 15s funding is that 15s is currently the feeder for 7s. How many people on the current 7s team have never played 15s - men or women? Until that format changes, we need to have support for both 15s and 7s - that or we'll have the weakest tight five you've ever seen...

Why is there an expectation that national rugby teams must be funded by the government?

There is no comparison between 15's and 7's rugby. RC will tell us and the funding organizations that there is but we all there isn't.

All amateur sports are funded by the feds.

FB We already have the weakest tight five(mens team)
that I have seen internationally!! Our scrums go
backwards so fast the SH is in danger of getting
    trampled.

Paladin - The women's team is not so unfortunate - but might be if only 2 second rows and 2 props are carded.
The current format is obviously not the answer to being successful at both 7s and 15s - and frankly I feel that we won't be successful at either...
    So what is the solution?

Does Own the podium get federal funding at all? I know most of it is not government money, but raised privately. OTP and carding are not related, carding does come from the federal government.

The Government of Canada is the largest contributor to the Own the Podium initiative. Through Sport Canada, it contributes a total of $62 million in enhanced excellence funding each year to Canadian winter and summer sports. A total of $22 million of this enhanced funding is committed to winter sports, and $34 million for the summer sports and $6M is targeted to team sports.

So I guess the Gov't supports Sports Canada which in turn supports Own the Podium "initiatives".
It doesn't seem right that because we are now involved with OTP that funding in other places (15s) would be taken away. Shouldn't OTP be a boost to the base?!

OTP is there to fund success in Olympic sports. Sadly 15's does not qualify therefore we are going to get a regretable focus on 2/3's of a fifteens team.

It stinks, but it is the way at this point. 15's will end up meandering through on a comparative shoestring unless it fund itself at a high level.

7's will become the glamour game in North America, and unfortunately take away from the rest, unless 15's can leverage off of the success to build it's own revenue base beyond what the diehards can contribute.

Personally I like watching sevens, but I'll continue to coach and develop players for 15's. To me that's where the game is. 7's is a sideshow, popular and fun to watch, but a sideshow.

OTP program is the "carrot and the stick" approach to motivation and fits right in there with the current Federal Government's culture.

However, the ladies 7s program will I surmise benefit rightly so from their record and standings in both the WRWC 15s and their consistent placings in the more recent iRB women's 7s.

They have a consistent 4th. place finish in one and more importantly a 1st and numerous placings in the top 4 of previous 7s tournaments.

Well of course OTP want to back winners and not rank amateurs as regrettably our mens 15s in 16th place and dropping along with our less than "golden" finishes in a series of international 7s tournaments over the past 10 years.

It is tough on the guys, they are expected to compete with top professionals in both disciplines. The have done remarkably well for the amount of rugby they get to play at that higher level.

Our women on the other hand are well situated in a relatively small group of amateur 7s rugby nations.

We have been leaders in the development of the women's game outside of England and the USA and now a very small group in N.Z. that have dominated the scene since they took up the challenge of women's rugby.

Canadian women can have every right and expectation of such funding and with their already high level of individual and collective commitment to developing their skills and abilities along with almost blind dedication to the goal to bring home a "medal" in 2016 from Brazil.

That is what Sports Canada, OTP & their Conservative masters in Ottawa expect of them. Good P.R. for the Country and possible for the Federal election campaign in
    perhaps 2016 and beyond.

    Good luck Guys and Gals.

    Good morning,

I suppose you are refering to the list of carded athletes on our Website. The grant amount identified on that list is the total grant received within the current sport carding cycle, which differs between all carded sports. The current cycle for the Rugby - Woman program is from October 1st, 2010 to September 30th, 2011, and for the Rugby - Men program, it is from September 1st, 2010 to September 30th, 2011.

I hope this clearly answers your question,

Perhaps I have been hit in the head too many times, but doesn't Womensprogram's post confirm that several retired players are on the carded list? Aren't we entitled to know why?

The answer lies with JL, KD and GJ. That was the two coaches and the then HPD and the now in hot water men's 7's coach.

Let's see who the new coach and and the new HPD card in the next new and improved OTP funded cycle.

part of the info was given by jl and kd, but ultimately it still came down to jt and the manager to make final decisions. Daunting task for a new coach, but i dont think all of jl and kd recommendations made the cut from what i have heard from other girls...

In this deck of cards you shuffle, who's NOT carded that you think SHOULD be carded?

After finishing sixth at the last WC I would think the new coach would sharpen his axe and un-card the entire lot. Throw away the jokers .... oh they already did that. One went to Wales and the other with his tail between his legs to rat-hole Alberta.
