I came across a broadcast schedule on the CBC Sports website for their September Sports Day in Canada Broadcast http://www.cbc.ca/sports/sportsday/ It looks like the CRC final is listed to be broadcast from 2-3:30 pm eastern time. Great for the game of rugby!

I remember when CBC used to show rugby more often. I think it was in 1982 that Ontario beat BC in the National Final in Calgary and it was on TV. I remember watching Dave Loucks who I played school and club with in the second row going against Ro Hindson.

Over the last couple of years I've seen several posts here regarding having rugby televised in Canada to highlight, promote, and grow the sport we all love so much. I'm surprised that the news our national broadcaster is televising the final of our top domestic league (CRC) coast to coast has been met with the sound of crickets - aside from Harry's recollection from the past.

Maybe everyone is just waiting to see if it actually airs, there have been at least three or four "stream" broadcasts that RC has failed to deliver on.
On a side though they should get the Bears vs Ontario game shown,

"The Blues have made two changes to their starting lineup for this weekend, bringing Mark Macsween to replace Nolan Ott at Number 8, while Dan West shits from open to blind wing as Ryan Macsween is replaced by Hugh McDonnell on the right wing."

that would be one hell of a streak! Maybe the communications people should learn to use spell check?

The final will be a national CBC Sports television presentation as opposed to an internet feed. Apparently they are in St. John's today shooting head shots of each Rock and WP player for the September 18th broadcast. I don't think CBC Sports would waste their time and money if the game was not to be broadcast.

As for internet feeds of games, some CRC organizations have had no problem providing them while other organizations have claimed they can't do it. It was the organizations that failed to deliver, not RC.

BS you seem to be in the know about all things RC, so if the CRC teams are responsible for the broadcast what is our communications team up to these days, other then not streaming or announcing Commonwealth team or carded players or...

I'm not "in the know about all things RC" by any means. A buddy of mine has been involved with the internet feeds from Rock games and I asked him how it works since I thought it was great the games are online. I believe RC provides $ and direction on how it's done and the organizations take it (or not) from there. Not very difficult apparently.

Now, back to the CBC Sports television broadcast discussion...

Does your friend know when RC will communicate the November tour?

    Bisquit,

I found this on the RC website:

    Manager of Communications
    Doug Crosse (ext. 231)
    dcrosse@rugbycanada.ca

Perhaps we can cut out the middlemen and you can ask him yourself and post it on the "November Tour" thread. This one was started to let people know our sport is being televised.

bs_detector is correct - the boys all did headshots with CBC to be used for the final game.

Good production (hope Cross took notes). Game was pretty average, especially in the 1st half, I know it is wet but players should be able to adjust and catch it more then not. Thought Bucanan should have been replaced after the 5th time he knocked on at the base, the kiwi kid who replaced him looked way sharper passing and controlled it better. Rock scrum killed the Wolf Pack one, which is worrying as the Wolfpack front row is supposedly international level.

Hulk - Agree with you about Buchs - Thought him and Jake should have split the game like they did 2 weeks ago.
The Rock scrums finished on top, but I think they only worked hard every 5th scrums, the other four, the front row was pretty even. I would say Kyne made the scrums looked messier than they were at 8 for the Pack.

Oh and how about those hits?!?!

All in all, I think 75% of the squad going to Argentina should have been picked from those two teams... not 25% as Crowley selected.

Had to work, what was the score. I got to see the last 5 or 6 minutes of the first half.

Where was everybody? couldn't see many people there. What was the attendance? I couldn't see a stadium, stand, terrace or any bleachers... A lot like Calgary Rugby Park with a big warehouse next to the pitch

Great to see it on TV. Good work CBC and Congratulations to the Rock! You Rock. Just hoping you made a whole pile of money on this from the fans! Put back some money in Newfoundland and Atlantic Canada Rugby!

Sloppy game, IMHO. I wish that they did not cut away all the time to interview during game time.
Beginning of the game, they forgot to put up the score and time.
Wolf pack could not handle the ball in these conditions. Rock did not win it, WP lost it.
I was hoping that there would be a better performance by both sides (and weather also) to show off to Canadian audience.

Rees did a good job in commentary and explaining the rules.

    HT 0 - 0
    FT 19 - 8
Rock: 1 converted try, 4 penalties.
Pack: 1 unconverted try, 1 penalty.

I thought there would have been more of a turn out by fans and more than the reported 2,500 attendance. I was thinking at least 3,500 would have been the attendance to see the Rock win it all at home.

What the Rock need and Canadian Rugby is cheaper but more viewing areas for spectators. They need terraces so people can watch the match. Like in this photo to the right are terraces, baby steps before we go with expensive seater stadiums.

I've been involved in Rugby for over 30 years now and it wasn't until last Saturday that I figured out why rugby isn't televised on network TV. I thought Gareth Reese and the other announcer did a great job although I agree with Faust that a couple of the interview cut aways were ill timed, they seamed to have fixed that when they did a screen within a screen on the last interview during play !
But I think the reason rugby is missing out on network TV is because the game is so dynamic, to the point that there is no place to inert advertising. In baseball, football, hockey and tenis they get that done during stoppages in play but to do that in rugby would be pretty much impossible and to attempt to have breaks for advertising would change that dynamic to the point where we would be leaning toward North American Football, and I'd hate to see that happen again. I've seen on Rugby World Cup coverage where thay have inserted ads in the brodcast with 5 second bursts during play but it might be difficult and to find enough companies willing to pay for that type of limited exposure. That said I'd like to say CBC did a great job and I hope to see more coverage in the future.

They do not have to stop play to advertise. They could just run ads during stoppages of play and than continue on with the broadcast from where they left off on tape delay without ever stopping actual play. granted the game will cease to be a live broadcast at this point but would the TV viewer even care? As long as they got to see the game on TV.

I would be fine with this, gives one a potty and beer break.

Please! The reason it's not on network TV is because it is niche sport played (and even recognized) by a minority of Canadians. There are numerous ways to get sponsor slots. Even by projecting sponsor logos on the field during the broadcast (they were doing this in Europe maybe 20 years ago). Sponsors can sponsor the whole broadcast, or separate sections. The catch is to persuade sponsors of the value for money of their investment, the demographics involved must match their target audience etc etc....

My only negative comment would be that i wish the play by play guy actually new a little about rugby. It sounded to me like he was schooled a couple days before the game.

Yeah the announcer wasn't that familiar with it, but he had the idea right.

Overall, CBC did a great job. Hopefully this is the start of something!

The game itself was sloppy and not the spectacle that Parfrey professed it was the week before. Anti climatic and it lack imagination as TEAM BC "C" beat TEAM BC "D". If that is the pathway then RC is taking the wrong road.

Another reason might be things like the pissed guy with no shirt bursting in front of the camera screaming "Wolfpack Fuc*in' Suck". Sponsors LOVE that stuff.

Wouldn't want to reinforce any stereotypes.
