    Howlers Club Questions

    1) Do they pay dues to RC?
    2) Are they insured by RC?
    3) Why do they get better press coverage on the RC webpage then our Men’s National Team?

    Good questions Frank
The Howler stories make me laugh. They give
Howler "Caps" for playing 7's in Mexico. Why does a
rugby holiday in the sun merit coverage from RC?
Yes, they did "win" by beating a Mexican team in the
    final. Big Yawn!
It's Friday. How about a story re our National team in
Portugal and the starting line-up? DC get off your fat
    a** and write something worthwhile.

Frank Love to see your questions answered.
The Howler stuff just makes me Howl with laughter .
Howler "Caps" Give me a break! Why does a
7's tournament in Mexico merit inclusion on
the RC web-site? Sure they won, over a 7's team
from Mexico and passed out a few rugby balls. Yawn.
How about a Story from DC about our team in Portugal?
Who is playing? Time for DC to get off his large
butt and earn his salary. It's Friday PM and ?????

Frank - I only know the answer to the last question. Karl Fix, the team owner so to speak, does a great job of submitting stories to RC whether he writes them himself or goes through Doug Crosse. Kudos to someone taking charge of getting his own publicity. I know they have a Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2426610840 but don't know if they have a website. They do a lot of good things in my opinion.

Felicitaciones to the Howlers for a great result in Mexico.
Why don't we celebrate a Canadian success story instead of trying to pick it apart for a change.

If you actually think and read, they are obvious answers.
    1) They are a touring side. So do you pay dues again when you tour with a team to a Rugby Tournament?
    No
    2) They are insured, because they play regularly for other clubs.
    3)
Because Karl actually writes up the story and RC does not write any story. Plus the Howlers 7's probably play as many international tournaments as the NSMT 7's. So your problem with this, that NSMT does not print enough articles or that Karl prints too many?

MY problem is that our best scrumhalf is touring with them instead of the nsmt

The Regina based Dog River Howlers Rugby Club

The name itself identifies it as a club – do they pay dues to RC?

Which now leads to a new question – did the players get releases to play for the Dog River Howlers Rugby Club.

Looking for clarity, not really a problem.

I didn’t know that TS was the best 9 in the country

Will the Howlers get their caps quicker then the NSMT get theirs?

snowman, your must have had a little too much Tequilia if you are talking about either Buchanan or Brown. Both are ok club players but could never make the jump. Neither are great passers and they are too slow.
On another note is RC ever going to post the team for the weekend? or are we to guess?

At least Buchanan and Brown play #9 with their club.
White plays fullback or wing with JBAA and MacKenzie
is the backup to Phil Mack at UVic.
Don't worry Canada will beat Portugal with Sean or Jamie at scrum-half. It's all about the opposition.
Thursday night and still no starting lineup?
Does anyone know what Doug Crosse is up to?
Howlers and their Howler "Caps" just make me lol.
Not news worthy that a bunch Canadian rugby players
go a holiday and beat a bunch of Mexicians at 7's. Yawn.

    Reading is not your speciality.

Every member if you read is a part of another club.

Release? We are not talking professional players.

Honestly, how many Rugby Tournaments are done in Canada? Stampede 7's Calgary, Abbottsford, BC, Rugbyfest in Edmonton, and so on. Do you expect every social side that comes to Canada to pay for Rugby Canada fee?
Insurance is a cost of the admin fee of placing a team in tournament. The local rugby club also pays a rental fee for the use of facility to the union.

Plus if a bunch of boys want to play a game of rugby outside of Canada, is it any of Rugby Canada's business?

Karl Fixx is a better promoter than Doug Crosse. Karl was able to get a 7's game played at half time during a Saskatchewan Roughride Game. I would say that Karl Fixx probably has done more for rugby than Rugby Canada in promoting the sport in a positive way.

I can read -- Can you read between lines?

They are a club by definition. You do need a release to go from one club to another.

Yes they need to sanctioned by RC to tour.

Frank, I'm confused. I thought you wanted everyone to stop paying their RC dues? If what you say has any weight behind it (yeah, right!) wouldn't you be the biggest fan of such a 'rebel' team? Or is it because there is an American and a Kiwi in the side that you're being being so selective with your moral high ground?

Karl is just filling the void left by Rugby Canada. Many of ex Howlers are now Rugby Members. How many development teams exist for 7's in Canada? I know that Morgan was starting the Maple Leafs, but I think that might have died when they fired him.

    Frank, Bull***t.
You know how many different clubs get together to play 7's at Stampede 7's? They do not get a waiver from the club.

Why would they need to get sanctoined to play overseas? You think every Rugby Player who goes to play at Maggotfest has to be cleared by RC?

I know, because I have done it. I have played for the Howlers. I have played overseas and at Stampede 7's. So you are wrong wrong and wrong.

    Dog River Howlers Rugby Club
    2008-03-27 17:41:52

    Dog River Howlers Team
Dog River Howlers Rugby Club is an [list]invitational rugby club founded in early 2007 for the lovers of ‘the game’ based in Dog River, Saskatchewan, Canada, the fictional home of the for CTV's popular "CORNER GAS" TV series - http://www.cornergas.com/home/.

The CTV network were good enough to allow us to use their ‘branded registered’ name for this worthy cause.

This invitational side is made up of men and women of all ages and levels from all parts of Canada along with invites from around the globe who want to be involved in furthering our game in Canada and elsewhere. The club will tour to interesting 2nd and 3rd world countries, play rugby, enjoy a unique cultural experience and fun holiday while also giving something back to that country's sport and people.

The culture of our game in many ways has been diluted. The Howlers also want to connect players as a community from all parts of Canada and abroad. While doing so the veterans of the game pass on their knowledge and experiences of our game's unique traditional culture and proud and interesting history.

What a better way to do this then by touring together?

The club will also engage in regular fund raising activities which in turn will go towards what the club deems as ‘worthy causes.’ Hence the club's motto is the age old rugby saying ''IT'S MORE THAN A GAME - IT'S A WAY OF LIFE," which is on every Howlers jersey, t-shirt, golf shirt, etc.

THE HOWLERS WILL ALSO LOOK AT HOSTING ANY TOURING TEAMS (MEN AND WOMEN) PLANNING ON COMING TO SASKATCHEWAN. WE IN TURN WILL ASSEMBLE A TEAM WITH PLAYERS FROM VARIOUS CLUBS FROM VARIOUS PARTS OF CANADA AND EVEN ELSEWHERE.

To this date the Howlers have raised well over $100,000 for both our national senior men’s and women’s teams, have collected 16 hockey bags filled with various rugby items we passed to the Cuban rugby community and various orphanages and schools, provided gear for the Rwanda Rugby Union, in addition to many other outreach and passback programs.

    WHAT THE CLUB COLORS REPRESENT
    Red - Canada
    Orange – Saskatchewan (Prairie Lily)
Black - The Saskatchewan midnight sky.

    WHAT THE CLUB LOGO REPRESENTS

Harvest Moon/Setting Sun represents the stark beauty of the Prairies.

Traditional Prairie Grain Elevator represents the co-operative spirit that prevailed amongst our early pioneers that survived and then prospered in such a hostile environment.

Coyote - a Prairie animal that lives in a pack but hunts singly.

This is in turn relates to the ‘HOWLERS’ concept. The beauty of the game of rugby, where there is a place for all, both on and/or off the pitch and where we work together on and off the field to help fellow rugby players but also non rugby people that are less fortunate than us. But although we work and play together as team on and off the pitch we also each have individual duties and responsibilities as part of that team.

“Individual commitment to a group effort -- that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work,” the late great Green Bay Packer coach Vince Lombardi said.

If you are interested in joining the Dog River Howlers or want more information on their community efforts around the globe contact club president Karl Fix at karl_v_fix@hotmail.com

Take it easy on Frank, boys. I think you missed his point.
First There are RC rules re releasing players from
club to club and touring. No way King Karl
follows any RC rules. Not saying he is wrong.
Then Why does RC post Karl's stories about a bunch
of rugby guys playing 7s in the sun? Yes they
beat a bunch of Mexicians at rugby. So What?
Who cares? Hand out some more Howler "Caps"!
Pretty sure Karl sold RC on what a great fund
raiser a Cubian piano would be.

Again read the mandate of the Howlers.

Howlers are an Invitation team (so if I and bunch of boys want to play beach rugby in Rio, then we do not need to releases from Rugby Canada or the club). They play the spirit of the game in which help less fortunate countries like Cuba, Rwanda, and Mexico in Rugby. They are raise money for local charities which increases the community awareness of Rugby in the local community (which the image of drunken idiots running naked through a grocery store).

So based on his mandate, I really do not understand your objections. Or you just like to complain about everything and do nothing about it.

Good on Karl Fix. Nothing to question or complain about. We need more stories like this, as opposed to constant second guessing and complaining.

FAUST IS KARL FIX. THE 'FAUST' IS IN.

Snowman you're an idiot. Just because you rode the pine with the Niagara lightning and you saw colin brown showering, doesn't make him the best SH in Canada. How's playing fourths at Capilanos by the way?

I know a lot of people who are in new York for the sevens this week, playing for various teams. I doubt the teams are all registered and all the players have releases. I know the lawyers have muddled up a lot of things but that's how rugby used to be before registration. Have boots will travel and drink beer.

Honestly if we ever get to the point where we need to get releases and permission to take a vacation and play rugby with friends, we won't have to worry because everything most of us love about rugby will be dead.

Ontario does require that players ask their current clubs before they play for another, and ORU says it needs to be informed if a player is playing in any non league sanctioned event
The first is to prevent a player from not paying their dues to club A and then playing for club B, leaving club A out of pocket. The second simply allows ORU to let you know if the event will be covered by your CRU insurance
At worst these guys might be risking their own insurance coverage.
    Keep on Howling

Would we be having this conversation if the Howlers were the Dog River Howlers Team instead of the Dog River Howlers Club? What if they all toured together and gave themselves a different name every time? Does RC even have a list of all member clubs?
I'm a huge fan of the Howlers and an admirer of what Fix has done and definitely looking forward to hearing about how the does at their next tourney.

A great little clip on youtube that the Howler's have put together.

[+] Embed the video | Video DownloadGet the Video Widget

More clubs/provincial unions/national bodies need to be doing this when they tour. I find it more than a little sad that the one which is doing it amazingly well and is setting an example for all of us gets criticised.

Thanks for clearing my initial point.

    1) The Howlers do not pay dues to RC

    2) They do not require releases

    3) They have their own insurance

    4) Why do they need RC? Press coverage

Which brings me full circle to my initial point ---

    Stop paying your dues

    Frank,

I see you desparately trying to start a revolution but...

You're not proving anything, and all you accomplish is a bitter sound.

There are much better topics for you to follow up on than the Howlers.

Like it or not Winger it generated some conversation. Just because I do not agree with you does mean I am bitter. I just disagree with you.

I think the administration is doing an awful job and that the salaried staff are worse. This doesn't make me bitter, it is just an opinion.

You should stop sucking on that lemon
