    John Jones was a giant in Quebec rugby and he sadly lost his battle with cancer this year. Rugby Quebec has set up a scholarship fund through the Canadian Rugby Foundation in his honour. There may be people on this forum who knew John and what a great bloke he was. If you did, please read below and consider donating to this most worthy cause.

    Rugby Quebec is pleased to announce the creation of the John Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund, a first of its kind for rugby in Quebec, was created to provide an annual bursary for one or more Quebec based rugby players who are enrolled in a full time post-secondary program. The funds, held by the Canadian Rugby Foundation, will serve to provide current and future generations of Quebec rugby players, assistance in pursuing their educational dreams.

    Dr. John Jones was one of the great characters in Quebec rugby. Arriving in Montreal in 1964, from his native Australia, John began playing rugby for the Montreal Irish RFC. A teacher for 31 years at Champlain St Lambert, John brought his passion for rugby to the school and in 1979 John founded St. Lambert’s Champlain College (Cegep) Men’s Rugby Team. Five years later in 1984 John, along with two former players founded the St Lambert Locks. In addition to being a founding father of both Champlain College Rugby and the St Lambert Locks, for a time John also ran the national championships for under 19 men and women in Canada, and was the glue for Quebec Combined Old Boys. The intrinsic values of this fund, created by Rugby Quebec, and dedicated to honour the memory of a great Quebec rugby man, are in line with the life’s work of John - rugby, education and good will in life.

    On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Federation du Rugby du Quebec I would ask that the club administrators receiving this message pass it along to all of their members and alumni. I would ask that all clubs consider making a contribution to the fund and encourage their members to contribute as well. With the support of the rugby community this fund has the potential to provide countless numbers of our young athletes with financial assistance for generations to come.

    Donations to the fund can be made online at http://www.canadianrugbyfoundation.ca, simply by clicking the “Donate” rugby ball. Next simply decide the amount you would like to donate and select “08: John Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund” in the Fund/Designation field. Donations are eligible for tax receipts.

    Eligibility

    Candidates need to meet the following criteria to be considered for the bursary;

    1. Enrolled in a full-time degree (graduate or undergraduate), diploma or certificate program at a Canadian college (CEGEP) or university for the academic year commencing in the year in which the scholarship is granted. Students commencing their studies in the Fall are eligible.

    2. Be Quebec based and actively involved and devoted to the game, either as a player, referee or administrator.

    3. Complete a letter, not more than 250 words, describing the reasons why you would be a worthy recipient of the John Jones Scholarship. Include your contributions to the rugby community, how you have helped expand the game, other volunteer activities, your academic achievements, your most important accomplishments and your future goals;

    4. Two letters of reference from two individuals named in your application. One must be someone who has been involved with you in the rugby community;

    5. Unsuccessful applicants may reapply in a subsequent year.

    Another request has gone out for donations to the John Jones Memorial Scholarship as we go into this Christmas period. If you were fortunate enough to have known John, who was an absolute legend in Quebec rugby circles, or would simply like to donate to a great cause, please read below.

    Yours in rugby,
    AussieBack

    Greetings everyone,

    It’s now been just a few months since we said a fond and sorrowful farewell to one of Montreal’s great characters in Rugby-John Jones. We immediately set about establishing an appropriate way to remember him and his enormous legacy for Education and Rugby in our province and especially here in Montreal. Through the good efforts of Jamie Lockwood and his fellow board members at the Rugby Federation of Quebec the John Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund was launched with the aim of providing support for young potential rugby players still in education and hoping to further their ability in the sport so dear to John Jones.

    We currently have received 11 donations for a total of $7,569.07 and need to be at $10,000 by the end of the year in order to provide a good investment return and begin awarding bursaries in the coming season.

    I am appealing to you to consider making a donation to Johns Memorial fund so that this target can be reached. The fund is under the security of the Canadian Rugby Foundation and scholarships will be awarded by a board comprised of members of the FRQ, the Locks and Montréal Irish Rugby Clubs annually to the most deserving candidates.

    Please help us make it to the try line before the final whistle on 2010. It matters not how much-it would only take 70 of us to contribute $30 each and we are there. You are at liberty to contribute as you wish for any amount however large or small. Please know that it will make a difference and be thoroughly appreciated!

    Your contribution can be made directly on the web site attached under this note, or if you prefer you can send it directly to me and I will see that it is paid in with the proper record of your kindness and willingness to help us do something good for Rugby here in Quebec and in the name of an outstanding Academic who never tired helping young people to excel in both Education and in Rugby.

    Thank you for your kind consideration and best wishes to You and Family for a Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy and rewarding New Year.

    My address is 49 Chemin de la Vigne, Westmount, QC. H3Y2C3.

    Thank you,
    Mike Magee.

    Footnote: To those eleven individuals who have been so generous thus far-we are very grateful for your contributions.
