Burger was banned for two months after being found guilty of gouging the Irish
wing Luke Fitzgerald in the opening seconds of the game, won by South Africa
with the final kick. Television footage clearly showed the Western Province
player scratching at Fitzgerald’s eyes, yet it took the Canadian judicial
officer Alan Hudson more than 12 hours to deliver his verdict....http://www.newarticlesources.com/blog/2009/06/lions-livid-at-brutality-of-boks/

He cannot be seen to be too keen to right the wrong.
Regrettably, Burger should have spent at least 10 mins in the bin or even more appropriate sent - off.
The series has been too long. The last three matches were three to many. Or, it would have been better if the ememerging Boks had been the Saturday before the 1st Test and a whole 7 days of rest between each of the two tests as in the case of this coming 3rd. Test.
Management should have saved, time, players and money had they not accepted all of the opening series of games against all these made up provincial sides.
What I would like to come under consideration would be for the Tri Nations sides to come up with a Lion`s players type touring side that would travel North every 4 years slotted betwen the existing schedule of the current B&I Lions tours. The KIWALABOKS would play all four home nations plus a two game test series against a British & Irish Lions team.
The B&I Lions would continue to reciprocate by playing all three Tri Nations teams plus the 2 game Tests against the KIWALABOKS.
The present tour and the original concept of the B&I Lions Tours is out of step with todays professional game, it`s demands on the individual players selected. As mCgeachen has be moaned following the latest loss, their should be more freed up time for preparation at home before departing on such tours and for the number of fixtures reduced to reflect the new "ethos" of the Game..

You wouldn`t have heard a peep out of the Lions management if they had a) pick a tighthead who could scrummage and won the first test or b) Burger (who incidently did spend 10 mins in the sin bin) had rightly have been sent off and they had won the 2nd test.
Thems the breaks....
As for this Kiwalaboks - the British Lions is basically a United Kingdom team. One country plus ROI. Aus, NZ, SA have nothing to play for - no unifying call to arms. Aussies I know here wanted the Lions to win as they detest the South Africans so much. Same if the Lions had played the Kiwis.

I do remember a combined ANZAC team playing in the amateur days but I think you are right, there would be no passion for the team proposed by toothless. If the Lions didn`t already exist and have tradition they do no one would suggest forming them now in this proffessional era.

Burger got binned for ten minutes but it should have been for the game. That would ahve changed the entire complextion of the game. His gouge was far worse than quinlans and quinlan got 12 weeks. It seems to me that disicpline is handed out by the IRB just like it is by the NHL, completely arbitrarily.
As for the kiwalaboks I had thought of that also. It would be great spectacle but i have to agree that there just wouldn`t be much of an appetite for it from the southern hemisphere countries. What I would like to see is the winner of the Heinekin cup play a home and away against the winner of Super 14. Or even a one off that rotates north and south each year.
Bulls vs Tigers would have been a cracker!!

Yeah but it would have been Bulls vs Leinster, not Leicester, as they won the Heineken cup this year. Just two letters different but It was Brian O`Driscoll and co that won.
