NSMT's camp

Interesting to note the presence of Neil Barnes at the camp and scrum coach. I'm sure he is a talented scrum technician and will be a great benefit to the boys prior to the Churchill cup. I thought I remember his name when I read about him on the RC website so I googled his name and found the article I had read 6 months ago about his former employer and current NSMT's coach last employer, the Taranaki Rugby Football Union.
After spending the next month and a half in the RC setup I would like to ask him his views on the RC setup. How it compares with a provincial union in a country like NZ and what he feels is neccessary to take Rugby in Canada to a higher level.
I don't think that anyone if their wildest dreams expects Canada to win against the top tiers of world rugby any time in our life time. However to be able to compete and win against the likes of the Italys, Scotlands, Fijians and Samoams more than we lose and perhaps attain the lofty position or 12th in the world would be a goal worth striving for.
Rugby in Canada seems directionless. The management of it I mean. Everybody has opinions about what needs to be done but very little long term strategy seems to be in the offering. I wonder if geting a few people, who have excutive experience in professional rugby, to examine the RC setup would in anyway advance the cause at all. Examine the executive setup, the decision making process, the efficiency of finances spent and the management of people (staff) and players. Open up the whole thing and then make the finding public
Anyways, just a little musing on the last night of a longweekend. I'm glad "Barnesey" is here and hope it helps the boys.
Here is the article that I had seen and the open letter he wrote that was originally printed in "Taranaki Daily Times"

No doubt that Japan has surpassed Canada at every level right now.
Japan has two tiers of professional (one fully professional, one semi-professional) rugby which has attracted very high caliber players from all over the world. This has had a demonstrative impact on the Japanese level of play. I don't think that we are going to chang that anytime soon but we need to do something to increase the level competition that is available to players that aspire to the national team.
My thinking is that CRC needs to be lengthened (perhaps double RR) and elevated to at least a semi-professional level. Of course sponsorship is going to be the challenge but I think any hope of stemming the growing gap between Canada and the rest of world rugby is going to require professional rugby to be the breeding ground for our NSMT.
