NSWT France Tour

Am hearing rumblings that the France tour will cost the ladies $4000.00,that coupled with the Nations Cup $2500.00 = $6500.00 in 4 mths. plus lost wages!I think that only 2 games are scheduled for France could be wrong ,one being Can vs Fra at the Stade Francais and the other an 'A' game.So for 4 grand some girls will get 1 game.Instead of parents writing the Sports Minister about the calanders, they should be writing about the injustice the ladies endure to foot the bill for everything to play for their country. Please correct me if I am wrong but wasn't that one of the reasons behind the lotteries to fund Sports, especially National Teams.

What's the $4000 going to? Seems like a lot.
I managed to fly to Australia and live off that much money, full rent, mind, for three months until I needed to get a job.

I am hearing that there is resistance to the size of this bill. Sounds like RC will need to rejig this idea if they want the ladies to buy in.

If the ladies could get together as a group with no disenters, I think they would be able to apply pressure to RC to start doing the right thing by the ladies.

On top of the exorbitant cost, the girls were also told after the $2500 charge to participate in Nations Cup that there would be no further costs leading up to the WC.

Let's see, one of you is a parent if a player (fan), one of you is an alumni player (tlml1234), and at least one of you is a current player (team access) - what you all have in common is a failure to realize the reality of the situation these players are in... Where would the money come from if this "pressure" is put on RC? Will they show everyone a pot of gold they have been hiding from the last rainbow? However unfair the situation may be - it is not so different for any female athlete in a sport dominated by their male counterparts - I would suggest that synchronized swimming probably sees greater funding for women than men though...

You're wrong canadianrugbywriter..........Canadian Female Ski Jumpers get way more press than their male counterparts.

Wrong about me.
I know there's a shortage of money, but let's get real - what adds up to $4000 per player when booking a trip to France? Even with NO help from RC or the French Union, the cost per player should not even come close to that amount inclusive of air and ground travel, accommodations and meals etc.
Some money can DEFINITELY be freed up by trimming the fat from the RC offices. Dough Grosse comes to mind. I'm sure the "work" being "done" Nick Taylor et al could be more efficiently managed. 1 FTE in the RC is what ~$30000 a year? That money put towards the cost of say, a trip to France would cut individual costs dramatically.

I would like to add to this and agree with Teamaccess. How on earth does it cost anywhere near $4000 for 10 days in France, with kit, travel, accommodation and food? Then I hear that within 3 days of the girls speaking up about the ridiculous cost for the trip, RC reduces the overall cost by $26,000. That’s about $1,000 a player, sounds fishy to me.
Further more, It seems to me that at these costs for trips, it is obviously a pay to play model for our girls and that goes for everything from travel, accommodation, Meals, team kit and even TEST MATCH JERSEYS (yes, RC advised the girls they would have to add an additional $60-$80 to the trip costs to pay for their test jerseys, until Morgan Williams stepped in and said this was out of the question). Now I have it again on good authority that a major rugby brand (far bigger than, Barbarian, Kooga and under Armour) has said they will sponsor the girls for all on field, offield apparel, FREE OF CHARGE but were turned down because RC has contracts with the aforementioned clothing companies, absolute rubbish when you consider Kooga don’t even make girls clothing and the girls are still stuck with paying for their own apparel.
I have many more arguments, but I’m outta breath!

As ever thus, the sport of rugby along with many others have no concerns regarding gender equity.
Our Ottawa Government funds the women's program? It currently funds both the genders equally as it stands. It provides an annual grant as well as carding for both the men's and women's Rugby Canada teams.
It is really a matter of priorities on the part of Rugby Canada and it's governing body, the iRB.
The funding that our NSMT enjoys from the iRB is a dam slim amount compared to N.Z. , England and the remaining original 8 members is from the purse of the iRB.
What could that august body do to make it a proportionally level playing field. Secondly, the whole of the iRB body could re-position itself with regards to women's rugby.
They will not budge until they are threatened with a competing televised Women's Soccer World Cup.
R.C. would not like to take the lead position on changing this massive gender gap.
Meantime, women's rugby is treated like a pesky poor relative that for the optics the rugby community barely recognises their existence and dons to put in place the bare essentials of a WRWC .

what is it costing the Blues to travel to BC this weekend? Nothing right because it is iRB funded. But what did it cost the people when it was just RCSL?
Cost is proably so high due to "support" staff. Not that they are not worth it, but they are probably taking managers, therapists etc, coaches etc. I wonder if these people are being asked to pay, probably not, so just get the players to pay more right?
You can get blood from a stone, you just have to throw it hard enough....

first off canadianwriter quit tring to out members,we all have legitimate concerns and some such as fan is in a precarious position because his daughter plays and with politics these days who knows how people will take any criticism. Also we do realize the reality of the situation otherwise we wouldn't speak up.Second now that we hear that the 4000.00 to France has been dropped to 3000.00 how does that justify the 2500.00 for Nations cup in Ontario? If we have a sponsorship with companies for kits, and the like does it not include the women and if not WHY?If it does then why do they have to pay for the kits, and if not then why can we not have a sponsor for the womens team where would the conflict be.Could you not have more than 1 apparel sponsor? As for support staff this should never fall on the women, this should be a RC issue. There are girls that are not carded selected for the tour and might have to opt out due to the costs, how do we improve upon our pool of experienced players if we ask them to travel at such costs to play 1 game?

Great points re: marketing and sponsorship.
Two major WTFs for RC.
1. If we have kit sponsors (Kooga, Barbarian etc) as a union, why do the women have to pay for their kit?
2. If they do have to pay for their kit, why are they limited to the same crappy brands as those that provide for the men. Let's be honest, Barbarian is at the bottom of the pile for gear, but yet the women have to purchase that brand? If they have to pay, why not get something they want, from a good company - Adidas, Canterbury, Nike etc. Isn't that what the whole capitalist concept of purchasing goods is about?
If what defenseWTF says is true and RC turned down a sponsor because of interest in the women and not the men, but then the women are left without kit sponsorship, someone in the marketing department should be fired immediately. The salary Nick Taylor is overpaid could go towards cut some more costs to the players, just by replacing him with someone who is paid at a level related to the work actually being done.
I know there's the whole "we're trying to run rugby professionally but it's Canada and nobody cares so we can discard all real-world business practices" angle that RC uses, but to turn down money from a sponsor, and at the same time ask the women for more is abhorrent.
