Seems from the attached article that apparently there is one less spot available for the 2010 WRC in London. My opinion only but if I'm one of the girls (in the back three) currently committing myself to the program I'd be pissed. We all know that these kind of things go on (I do not subscribe to these kind of deals), but you would think that someone would have the common sense to keep this to themselves. The article is courtesy The Globe and Mail:

WINTERBERG, GERMANY - The women's national rugby team is holding a spot for Heather Moyse heading into the 2010 World Cup, and considering her remarkable strength and physical conditioning, well, is there any way at 37 she could hang on long enough to represent Canada in rugby sevens when it makes it debut in the Summer Olympics in 2016?

"The only time I think about it is when I think, why is not in 2012 instead of 2016?" said the brakeman on Canada's women's bobsleigh team, who doubles as a fullback and wingback in the national rugby program. "London. How perfect would that be?

"But, you know, I barely know what I'm doing next year. The thought is super-exciting, but I will not be staying in elite level athletics until then. I'd like to have time to, you know, develop a relationship and maybe have a family. If I feel like I need to test myself ..... maybe I would come out of retirement. It just depends where I am in life."

Wherever she finds herself in life, the Summerside native, who has been an academic and sports all-rounder for most of her life, will be a success. In the meantime, she'll likely be helping Canada break start records in World Cup bobsleigh on the way to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. This past weekend in Winterberg, Moyse and pilot Kaillie Humphries - herself a former brakeman who is in her fourth year as a driver - settled for fifth place in the women's World Cup event despite breaking the track record in one of the runs. It was the second time in four races that the pair have laid waste to a record.

Moyse is coming off a shoulder injury suffered playing rugby, and she admits breaking the track record in the first race in Park City, Utah, pretty much set up her year. "Everything looked good on paper, but you don't know until you're on the track," Moyse said. "That start was nice. It showed me I was where I needed to be."

Moyse is less concerned about injuring the shoulder pushing a sled than, say, tackling.

"The test will be when I return to rugby 15s," the 31-year-old graduate of the University of Waterloo said. "Right now, I mostly need to use it in a linear direction. I'm not tackling somebody or reaching out to grab a jersey."

Moyse, who was the leading scorer in the 2008 Hong Kong Rugby Sevens tournament and was Canada's only all-star in the 2006 women's rugby World Cup, has been told by the rugby program to not rush back after the Vancouver Olympics.

The rugby World Cup isn't until Aug. 20. To say she's appreciative is an understatement.

"They've told me they're leaving the door open for me," Moyse said. "I can only do that if I dedicate myself to rugby for five to six months, 100 per cent of the time, without my shoulder getting in the way."

You might say her success this winter has been a start.

Just so long as it's not at FB ... with Amiria Rule (nee Marsh) now playing centre, she's more likely to be breaking through the midfield than when she was playing FB in 2006.

Gonna need a solid tracker and tackler back there.

six months isn't enough time to teach this girl to catch, pass and tackle.

Rugby Canada should be embarrassed for even considering Moyse. These girls that are playing back 3 are not only streets ahead of her in ability but have also trained their asses off for the last couple of years, not to mention the work career sacrafices and financial commitments they have made, to be slapped in the face because someone ran in a couple of lucky tries 4 years ago.

    not on.

Heather Moyse is not someone who ran in a few lucky ones, she is a very good rugby player and has the one thing that can not be taught, speed. Whether it is fair to displace someone who has worked so hard for so long is another thing altogether and I don't know the answer to this question. It'a not like she has been taking it easy with her feet up, she has been training hard but without knowing team dynamics and how all the other players feel about it who knows. She is a dedicated athlete and a good rugby player but I'm not sure if she should be on the team or not.

Heather Moyse is a quality athlete and a quality rugby player. Her rugby skills match the international level. As far as the current back three being streets ahead, I don't see that. As good as they are, Heather Moyse will push them. If they can keep her off the team sheet good for them. If she earns a spot in the eyes of the coaches, good for her.

That's life at the top. Anyone aiming for the National team should understand that. If they don't they are on another planet.

Let me first say that I respect her ability to compete both as an Olympian, as a NSWT player and as a Humanitarium. The two sports are miles apart in similarities.Lets put this all in perspective,REAL comments as if she has never played before,Harry makes the point she has speed and hasn't run in any lucky ones.In 2006 she was the top try scorer in the WC having scored 7 trys, breakdown 4 against Kazakstan in a 45-0 win,2 against Spain in a 79-0 win and 1 try against Eng in a 20-14 defeat.Harry how many lucky ones do you think that makes?REAL she has played Rugby for quite some time and is an accomplished Rugby player,so she can pass and catch. In watching the games she has played internationally,my opinion is that her only asset is her speed, and in todays game and especially in the back three you need to have all phases in your repetoire.

Interested to know how Moyse can EARN a spot.. i mean, she will be ready to go say, mid march.... if the NZ tour doesnt get off the ground (which it looks that way).. that leaves her...hmmmmm.... 1, maybe 2 games to prove her worth prior to the WC, so lets say she will play in both games against the USA later this year, based on how often the back 3 are getting the ball in their hands during a game currently. Im guessing Moyse will have 6/7 touches between the two games to prove her worth... good luck with that.

Geez a lot of bashing on a girl who is just trying her best. DWTF is correct she will have to earn her spot, but given her track record she might be excused for not being down in FLA at the moment.

DWTF how would you know about touches and the back 3?

And don't be surprised if she does earn a spot. If nothing else, Heather Moyse has proven that she is dedicated and focussed.

There is no substitute for speed, especially in the back 3. Combine that with power and my money is on Moyse making the cut.

Winger14, must be canadian tire money cause watch the 2008 hong kong 7's final and tell me moyse (thrown in at the deep end. ie: hadn;t trained with the girls and prepared adequately) didn't single handedly lose that game for the other hard working girls in the 7's team. she's a great person and an ok player with speed. but last time i checked that a player was classed as a good player because they had speed was when i was in u/10's. and that soon ended when every one else learned to catch, pass and tackle.

good luck to her at the olympics. may she get gold this time. we'll all be watching.

    REAL,

You're a tough one to crucify someone for one mistake.

No player single handedly loses a match in any team sport. No matter what.

You have to look at the balance, and on balance, I don't see an issue with her being there. I think the coaching staff is being wise to giver her an opportunity as she has a lot to offer (not just speed).

If she makes it good on her.

    'Nuff Said.

There are no lucky tries except ones that I score and I haven't had a try since 2000. Good luck to all the women including Heather who try to make the WC squad and good luck on Saturday ladies, make it 2 for 2. Good luck Heather at the Olympics.

winger14. i wish i was as creative with words as you.

"You're a tough one to crucify someone for one mistake.

one mistake? my ass. watch the game and get back to me.

no player single handedly loses a match..... once again stop being new age canadian and realise some people are to blame. equality is great. but being honest and REAL sometimes gets you further.

it's great that you are so optimistic and supportive. i wish the best for you and your imagination.

    Nope just being realistic.

Accountability is one thing, skewering someone is another matter.

That however is your opinion, and you're stuck with it.

Congratulations to Heather on her awesome performance tonight. RC politics aside she is clearly one great athlete and very focused individual.

I saw her interview today on Canada AM. She handled herself very well. She will still have to earn her spot on the NSWT but once there she will be a great ambassador for our sport, probably garnering some added exposure, and she can't help but be an inspiration for the other members of the team. Good on her ! Congrats

Great try by Moyse to get the win against the USA today!

Overall a pretty slow game for 70 minutes with the last ten providing all the excitement. And What a finish!

    Congrats Ladies!

the old catch and put down. she's amazing.

what about kish and her great runs, or gallo actually setting up and handing heather that try.

    Really now...

Gallo caught the ball from a pressurized clearance kick. The ball was about halfway between the 22 and the 10 metre line on the left wing. Gallo ran a 45 degree angle to link up with Patzer and Moyse. The ball got to Moyse outside the 22. Moyse swerved infield to evade the US left wing and then straightened up to score.

Not quite a catch and put down.

Jen Kish was amazing when she came on. A very valuable impact sub. Hope it translates well if she starts the next one.

Tabitha Stavros was a force throughout the match as well.

Gallo was unfortunate not to score, she may have had to slow down a touch to catch the pass from Mandy Marchuk.
