Take a look at this article and tell me it all adds up.

Ahead of the 2011 Junior World Trophy, Canada's men's U20 team will be assembling for the single longest pre-competition training camp, one that will span eighteen days before final selections and then departing for the Republic of Georgia.

Thirty-two players will be going to Shawnigan Lake School on Vancouver Island, where first year coach Mike Shelley will put the group through an intensive preparation. The camp will include a pair of trial matches, before the list is slimmed to the twenty-six man final squad. (it looks to me that the 26 have already been finalized)

Shelley selected the current recruits from a previous camp held in March at Shawnigan Lake. The decision to go with one long training camp prior to the four matches of the JWT is based on Shelley's desire to maximize the players' time together, while also keeping an eye on the budget for the team. (like that has never been done before)

This training concept will allow for far more sessions, less expensive travel and overall huge increase in team continuity heading straight into the tournament.

"The idea is increase the contact time of the players and the coach in a competitive environment," said Shelley. (is the coach bangin around with the players) "First steps will be to establish team attitude and our playing style."

Canada takes on the host Georgians to open the tournament on May 24th after departing Vancouver on May 18th. The next match is four days later as Japan will play Canada on Saturday, May 28th. The first two games of the tournament will be streamed live on the International Rugby Board website.

Canada wraps the round robin portion of the event with a match against Zimbabwe for a second consecutive year. Based on results, Canada will play one final game on June 5th to wrap the tournament.

The Georgia match will certainly be a challenge. I have heard rumours that they have been getting in matches against development sides for French top 14 clubs. Can anyone confirm that?
What about our guy's tune up matches during the training period, does anyone know if those are inter-squad or who they might be against?
How many teams are relegated from tier one? I guess what I am asking is: do we necessarilly need to finish first to advance?

One up one down, you have to win to advance.

A friend / enemy of mine was at a CCC and he informed me that MS stated that Japan is too small and they would out muscle them and as for Georgia, they are fat and they will run around them.

Sounds like a well thought out plan to me.

Congrats to him, Harry. Good to see a young guy doing well.

To be honest, though, Toronto's contribution to being part of the big picture with regards to U20 rugby was piss poor last year. Both Niagara and Eastern Ontario managed to run programmes for Ontario in the national comp, why couldn't your mob?

Predictably though, their representation in the national squad is high and this is what kills Canadian rugby longterm - provinces or regions holding the rest of the country for ransom and getting away with it.

Decison was made by the TRU board not to field a team at that level, not sure why. I personally told some of the board members that I didn't agree with it, sounded to me as if it wasn't worth the cost in there opinion for the benefits they expected in return, not enough meaningful competion, or something like that. There are lots of good kids that age playing in TRU clubs.

Good for you, Harry. They should have listened.

The board members who said no are probably the same people who sit around scratching their head wondering why Canada is not performing well on the world stage. One of the main reasons is that countries need a healthy domestic representative league in all age groups to prepare athletes for the increasing demands of elite rugby. By not competing, the TRU weakened it's own players as well as its neighbouring regions (Niagara and EORU.) This weakens rugby as a whole in the east. They need to get in the game.

Re: lack of competition; Niagara, Quebec and Newfoundland all would have beaten Toronto last year.

Keep fighting the good fight, Harry.

I see the Derek Hyde lay selects beat Canada U20 at Shawnigan Lake yesterday and two Guys from the Ajax Wanderers scored, one for each team. Not bad for a team not in the Ontario senoir league. Congratulations John and Cam.

Tens trys scored on our U20s by a call up team that
had about 30 minutes of game prep.

To the English guy that is running the 18 day camp,
"Spend more time on DEFENSE". That, and goal kicking,
    win close games.

    Shelley. What was he thinking?

Well, politics have hit rugby and it is too bad for rugby in Canada. Some of the best U20's in Canada have been left off the list for some unknown reason. Too many from BC? Favours for Alberta/Ontario.
Take a look at the 2008 U17's that didn't lose at Millfield. A number of those players should have been on that team, especially in the backfield and up front.
What a disappointment Mike. Bad for this team and certainly bad for Canadian rugby. Sad actually.
Have a look Mike. You could have turned some heads. http://206.191.48.235/index.php?page_id=134&lang=en&news_id=3936
