    Bisquit,

The Rock program is based on great coaching, making the most of our limited resources and pride in representing your community. Any rugby community would be lucky to have that. Your "backwater" comment demonstrates that tired anti-Newfoundland bias that still festers in those of your ilk. It seems it really gets under people's skin when NFLD has any type of success and takes it to those who have so much more to work with.

The Rock represents all of Atlantic Canada (plus Quebec) in the CRC. This makes sense since The Rock is the top team in the region and thus supplies the majority of players (plus others from NS, NB and Que) for a regional representative team. The top coaching and facilities are located in St. John's as well.

It appears you're the one with a (biggoted, bitter and ill-informed) chip on your shoulder.

Sorry BS, "backwater" was more a comment on location then a banjo type scenario. I think your wrong on the Rock representing much more then St. Johns and cut offs from big populated rugby regions. Quebec and NS have more numbers playing and potentially stronger groups of young athletes then NFLD. I am appreciative of the Rock's rugby ambition but the sad fact remains it is not likely to have the populace to sustain itself.
No bigotry just my reality of playing numbers.

With the rock being able to draw from all of Atlantic Canada and Quebec as you say BS, one has to wonder why they would fly in players from the west coast?

Perhaps money would have been better spent with picking up players from the vast area the rock represents and put the savings into a mini program and develope more great players from NFLD

    Newbie,

You misread his post. He said the Rock represent the Maritime provinces and QC in the CRC. That is most certainly true. They could not however draw from QC or the maritimes (other than PEI) at U20 as those provinces athletes were already playing for their own teams. The 3 BC players would have been able to play for the Rock on the basis they had not already taken part in the competition for one of the 3 BC entries.

Bisquit, the Rock U20 beat Quebec U20 who in turn had defeated NS U20 to make the final. Whatever the potential of either of those provinces the Rock U20 were better on the day as well as having been the dominant team in the region for some time both at this age group and at senior level.

Finally : William, why would this be the last year of the U20 National Championship. No such platitudes were floated after last years final featuring BC and ON teams. One would hope to see the competition in fact grow and evolve (maybe with Toronto re-entering and PEI also taking part) and provide a platform for the national selectors to mold a successful U20 National team for 2011. I think we can all agree that the net needs to be cast wider for the selection of this team, especially given the surprisingly disappointing results from Moscow.

Does anyone know how the U20 format came about? Why aren't they provincial teams rather that reginal. The Junior National Championship is played with provincial teams why not the U20 championship, and why is it a stand alone game and not a tourney, like the junior tourney?

This years format was basically a throwback to the RCSL which at the end also had a U20 division.

There is a long history of Newfoundland rugby demonstrating a real dedication to the idea of representational age grade rugby. No question that Paddy Johns gave a good account on behalf of his fellow Newfoundlanders.
